Learn more about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT, is a form of counselling that focusses on how your thoughts and emotions influence your behaviours. It's very practical and collaborative, we work together to help you through your difficulties. It's important to note however, that there are lots of different types of counselling available and I'd recommend you do some research and make sure you find the one that best suits you.
I was drawn to CBT as I like its practicality. We do talk about the past to find out where the issue bringing you to counselling originates, but from there I will work with you to understand the unhelpful thinking styles, behaviours and emotions that are impacting your life right now and teach you the tools to combat them so that you can move forward without being held back by the same old issues.
Structure and evidence are key features of CBT. The sessions have a structure to them and within the sessions we have together we work with a beginning, middle and end of therapy in mind. We do this so that you know what to expect - there is full transparency. Each session will have an agenda set to ensure we stay focussed on the goals for that session as well as your overall goals for therapy.
Evidence is very important in CBT. There is a lot of research out there to demonstrate its effectiveness as a counselling intervention and I would encourage you to have a look at that. We also look for evidence with the work we do in sessions - using rating and scaling of issues at the start and then revisiting them through our sessions to check progress.
