HOW WE CAN HELP
CBT can help with a wide range of issues
Here you'll find specific information about Addiction; Anxiety; Depression; Exam and Interview Stress; Self Harm; Self Esteem; Weight Loss.
I've included specific information about the issues that the majority of my clients have come to see me to talk about, understand and work through, however this will be far from exhaustive. It's impossible to capture everything that you could be struggling with or that CBT can be effective in helping you manage in the pages of a website.
CBT is very adaptable, if something linked to your emotions, thoughts or behaviours is holding you back in your life - even if you don't see a specific page on the website about it - please get in touch and take the step to ask for help.
Addiction can strike in all sorts of ways and when least expected. The traditional addictions would be gambling, smoking, alcohol and drugs. However, as technology has moved on more people are seeking help for addictions to social media, gaming and phones amongst other things and these are just as debilitating as the more traditionally viewed addictions.
In truth we can be addicted to anything, the NHS Healthy Body website defines addiction as ‘not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it can be harmful to you’ so if there is something in your life that you would like to give up, that you know your life would likely be better without and yet with all that incentive to change you’re struggling, CBT could be the assistance you need to finally make the change you want to see in yourself.
CBT works with your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and all 3 come into play with an addiction. Alongside your therapist you will look at your thinking patterns, your emotions around your addiction and your behaviours. Together we’ll work on making gradual changes so that you can take back control of your addiction and move forward to the life you picture.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be highly effective when dealing with an anxiety issue. There are many different types of anxiety (generalised, health, social, situational to name just a few) and sometimes it can feel like you’re the only person who feels like this. In fact, according to the Scottish Health Survey 2019, 14% of adults had 2 or more of the symptoms of anxiety so you really are not alone and it’s important to hear that and hopefully start to believe it too.
CBT works with how you think about things, how you feel about them and what you do about them. By understanding how you experience your anxiety (because everyone experiences it slightly differently) we can work together to help you find a way to first understand what is happening and then to do something about it.
The really important thing to know, is that it really doesn’t have to feel like it does just now. You can learn to get in control of it and get your life back looking and feeling how you would like it to be.
It takes a bit of work, but then having anxiety is hard work too, so in the long run its worth a bit of work now to not have to live with the way you have been feeling.
If you’re interested in speaking to someone about your anxiety, please complete the quick self-referral form. It’s only some brief information and I'll give you a call back within 2 working days.
When depression hits it can feel all-consuming and also very isolating. It can feel like you’re the only person in the world who feels like this. So the first thing to say is that you absolutely are not alone. According to the Scottish Health Survey 2019, 12% of adults have 2 or more symptoms of depression. We don’t always talk about it though, which helps keep that feeling of isolation going.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be highly effective in helping people deal with depression and the impact it has on their lives. Working with your thoughts, emotions and most importantly your behaviour we can help you find your way back to feeling like yourself again.
The other thing worth knowing is that once you’ve had depression, you’re 50% more likely to experience it again. The thing to remember though, is that the work we do will give you the tools to recognise if it’s happening again and allow you to step in and do some work on yourself so that it won’t get as bad again. You get control back and that can be incredibly powerful in allowing you to get on with life.
If you’re suffering from depression and would like to speak about tackling it please complete the quick self-referral form and I'll be in touch within 2 working days.
Do you ever come out of exams or interviews knowing you could have done better….if only you weren’t so anxious? Well here’s the good news, you can. Just as anxiety takes a toll on our lives, panic about interviews and exams can really hold us back from achieving our goals in life.
Wouldn’t it be nice to go into an exam or interview and be able to acknowledge some nerves but manage to be yourself and perform to your full potential? Can you picture that? Take a minute to imagine it.
By working with a CBT therapist we can help identify where the fear and anxiety is coming from, evaluate how you are experiencing it and what you’re doing to cope with it and then help you find a way to tackle these situations without that paralysing anxiety.
If you would like to speak about working on your exam or interview issues please complete the quick self-referral form and I'll be in touch within 2 working days.
What is Self Esteem? If you have it, it’s hard to quantify but if you don’t it’s hard to imagine. Essentially it’s about having belief in yourself, belief that you deserve to be treated well by others and belief that you will treat others well. Do you deserve to have a happy life? To achieve your dreams? To live the way you want to? To be who you truly are?
Self Esteem issues typically develop as adolescents but the repercussions can stay with us for a lifetime. If you’re a teenager reading this (or if you’re reading it on behalf of a young person), now is the time to decide to do something about it. If you’re older and have had low self-esteem for a lifetime, you know it’s not an easy way to live. To both groups – it doesn't have to be this way.
It can be hard to imagine when you’re struggling with low self-esteem but you can decide to make some changes and become someone who has Healthy Self Esteem. This is where a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist can help. They can work with you to identify the root cause behind your low self-esteem and working with your thoughts, emotions and behaviours help you to find new ways of thinking, feeling and doing that allow you to shake off the shackles of low self-esteem and really be YOU and believe that its ok and you deserve to live the life you want.

Our relationships – romantic, platonic &/or family – are fundamental to who we are. When they start to have issues, whether that’s issues happening now or issues from the past coming up and need addressed, it can cause us real distress.
It often feels like nothing can be done, however most issues come down to communication of one form or another and this is where therapy comes in.
In the therapy room we are in a safe space where you will be supported while navigating the difficulties you’re facing in your relationship. Its not easy but if you both come along with an open mind and ready to talk (and listen) you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make.
If this sounds like something that might be helpful to you and your relationship and you’d be interested in a conversation about this, please complete the self-referral form and I will be in touch within 2 working days
Have you tried to lose weight before and then given up? Are you stuck in the yo-yo cycle? Do you want to lose weight but can’t get the motivation?
Weight issues can be the physical evidence of highly complex emotional issues. The usual advice of ‘eat less; move more’ is fine and true to a point but if your eating habits are all tied up in a bundle of emotional issues eating less and moving more will offer potentially only short term results but not necessarily longer term ones if you haven’t dealt with what is behind the emotional eating.
This is where CBT can help. Yes you will still need to change your eating habits and do a bit of exercise to lose weight but the CBT will get into the underlying issues that have led you to overeat in the first place. If, working with your therapist, you can deal with that and identify unhelpful thinking processes and unhelpful coping mechanisms you will be much further along the line to successfully achieving the change you would like to see in yourself and your life.
If this is something you would be interested in exploring further, please complete the quick self-referral form I'll be in touch within 2 working days.
We all feel stuck in life at times. Sometimes we can find our way through but other times we really are just stuck. It can be life, work or a combination of them both causing us issues and its an incredibly frustrating & demoralising feeling knowing something isn’t quite right but not seeing a way forward.
This is where a coach can be a great help. As a coach its my job to hear what’s going on and through questioning and discussions help you unlock what it is you really want and what the steps are to get you there.
If this sounds like something that might be useful for you and you’d be interested in a conversation about this, please complete the self-referral form and I will be in touch within 2 working days
